OCTOBER AT THE MUSEUM - 2019

I could not let the arrival of October 2019 on the calendar pass without greeting my spiritual friend "OCTOBER" in residence at the Musée des Beaux Arts de Montréal. I have adopted James Tissot's work and on each visit I go to say hello to her, a little like an old lover.... 
My visit was appropriate because I learned, with great sadness, that the work OCTOBER will be on loan from September 30 to the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco for a special exhibition surrounding James Tissot. 
Life is no longer the same without OCTOBER! 
Even the canvas that replaces it is in pain of love! 
I have of course some other works that I consider to be favorites and that I contemplate at each visit including "CLAIR DE LUNE" by Henri-Joseph Harpignie and "PAYSAGE (AVEC MARINE)" by Georges Michel but none replace OCTOBER in my heart! 
I also took the opportunity of my visit, this Sunday, September 29, to have a coffee and see the misdeed that one or more breakers did on the exterior wooden sculpture while the left arm was stolen. (Charles Joseph - Residential School Totem Pole). A sad and above all bizarre action! Fortunately, we will learn a few days later that the arm will be returned back over.
Have a good fall 2019 and have a good trip my dear OCTOBER!

STEVE MCCURRY AND THE GIRL

By Bernard Bujold -  Montreal Art Gallery GOT is presenting a unique exhibition of pictures by STEVE MCMURRY (born in 1950), the widely known US Photographer.  McCurry career was launched in 1984 when, disguised in native garb, he crossed the Pakistan border into rebel-controlled areas of Afghanistan just before the Soviet invasion. When he emerged, he had rolls of film sewn into his clothes. Those images, which were published around the world, were among the first to show the conflict.   The picture of the "Afghan girl" is considered a classic in modern photography. McCurry took the portrait of "Afghan Girl" in a refugee camp near Peshawar, Pakistan. The shooting lasted for only about 2 minutes and he took about 10 to 15 pictures. One of the image was however published in the National Geographic magazine and the girl face became famous as the cover photograph on the June 1985 issue. THE WAR OF THE TRADITIONAL MEDIA  By Bernard Bujold -  Quebec media specialist Eric Le Ray has just published a great digital book on the current media war on social media: "LE JOURNAL SANS JOURNALISTES ou le cinquième pouvoir des gens ordinaires". His look is particularly precise and detailed regarding the importance of ordinary citizens who have become the new journalists on social media.  A particularly interesting book as the US mainstream media face a real war for their survival against the new President Donald Trump.  A must read!  See book site

THE STORY OF LIFE - THE HOUSE OF SCORTA

By Bernard Bujold -  I just finished reading the novel by Laurent Gaudé: THE HOUSE OF SCORTA.  A french novel published in 2004 (Prix Goncourt) but I had not read it before...  I would say that this is one of the best books I have ever read in life, at least as to its depth look at human life.  The history of this little novel lies in a family of Southern Italy and makes us understand the deeper meaning of life, its successes, its failures and its conclusion, death.  If there is one conclusion is that the olives are eternal...  Photo 1 and 2: Images of southern Italy; Photo 3: Cover of the book; See description of the book ;
